Signs of Drug Addiction

Signs of Drug Addiction

Drug addiction is never totally symptom-free. Various physical and psychological symptoms are signs of drug addiction. The most common include:

  • Tremors
  • Sweating
  • Bloodshot eyes
  • Dilated pupils
  • Headaches
  • Mood swings
  • Agitation and restlessness
  • Aggression
  • Slurred speech
  • Poor coordination

Additionally, there are behavioural changes that are often associated with drug addiction. These can be harder to pick up on but over time a pattern should start to develop that will make it easier to detect behavioural changes. Seven things to watch out for are:

  1. Withdrawing from family and friends.
  2. Avoiding socialising or activities previously enjoyed such as sports.
  3. Borrowing money or selling belongings.
  4. Disappearing for hours or days with no explanation.
  5. Showering and changing clothes immediately after going out.
  6. Regularly calling into work sick or not being able to fulfil responsibilities, such as collecting children from school.
  7. Poor personal hygiene.

At the early stages of drug addiction, it is normally easier to hide the signs. Withdrawal symptoms tend to be less severe and behaviour might not noticeably change. This is why it may take a while before anyone realises there are signs of addiction present.

Denial is a very strong factor when it comes to drug addiction and until the symptoms and signs of drug addiction become serious enough to cause an issue in daily life, they are often ignored. Dismissing signs of drug addiction could lead to serious consequences and even death from overdose.
