How Long Does Rehab Take?

How Long Does Rehab Take

If you are considering addiction treatment, you are probably wondering, how long does rehab take? This is dependent on various factors, which include:

  • Substance or substances you are addicted to
  • How long you have been using these substances
  • How often you use these substances
  • How much of a substance you take at one time
  • The types of therapies that are most effective for your individual circumstances.

However, the two most popular lengths of rehab are:

    1. 30 days — this is the most popular programme, often because it is more affordable and it is easier to take a 30-day break from your responsibilities.

  1. 60 days — this may be recommended if you have a severe addiction, are addicted to several substances or have concurrent mental health disorders.

You may have heard of fast detox or 5-day detox programmes to treat addiction. While these may work in the short term, they are rarely effective long term. Addiction changes the brain and the way it functions, and this will not have been reversed during a short stay in rehab. This is why it is essential to not only go through a medically assisted detox but also spend time dealing with the reasons you became an addict.

If you don’t address any of the psychological aspects that caused your addiction, you will have no tools to cope with challenges. Consequently, you are at a higher risk of relapse in the early stages of recovery directly after your detox. This is why a fast or 5-day detox often is unsuccessful. If you do relapse, you are also at the highest risk of overdose if this occurs following a period of abstinence.

If you can afford to spend longer in rehab, then it is always beneficial, but that doesn’t mean a shorter stay will not be successful. One important factor to consider is the addiction aftercare programme provided. Can you attend group sessions at the rehab centre? Are there schemes to ensure you are not alone and have access to mentoring? Maintaining permanent abstinence will be challenging regardless of whether you have stayed for 30 or 60 days. So good aftercare following rehab is critical to prevent relapse after residential rehab for drug or alcohol addiction.

We provide free advice about addiction treatment and will be able to give you guidance on how much time you will require in residential rehab based on an individual assesment.
